Our Introduction to Botanical Dyeing on Paper is for anyone interested in getting started with natural dyeing using everyday objects and plants you can easily find wherever you are in the world.

No experience or specialist equipment is needed. We are using everyday items found in your cupboard, garden or at your local supermarket.

This course is focussed on dyeing and mark making using natural pigments on paper. You can use some of the same techniques into fabric but we will mostly be working on paper. With fabric there is a lot more prep required to prepare the fabric for dyeing (so you can wash and reuse) which we don’t need to do with paper.

We will cover the following resources on this six week course:

  • Equipment + Materials
  • Making Natural Pigments
  • What paper to use
  • Resist dyeing on paper
  • Mordants
  • Shibori + Gradient Dyeing
  • Mark making with Objects
  • Collecting plants
  • Steaming plant bundles
  • Sun dyeing
  • Making a natural colour journal

Kits

Inside the kits we will provide paper to use with the project. Everything else you will find in your cupboard so to save you money, it is better for you to source these yourself. Please email us if you prefer us to source this for you and we will try and meet your needs. A materials list will be provided.

Materials and equipment

  • Aluminium or copper pot for dyeing with lid. These metals help to mordant your dye. A stainless steel pot will still work well but you will get deeper colours with the first two metals.
  • wooden spoons - please don’t mix ones you use for cooking
  • white vinegar
  • Salt
  • empty jars
  • Soya Milk

About Me

Yvette Ja has been running bookbinding, origami and sculpture workshops for 12+ years and brings her Mixed Korean/UK heritage to her work, making it the best of both worlds! I learned how to bind books at a Victorian bindery at The Literary and Philosophical Society and have done extensive research in Artist's Books in my own practise. In 2011 I set up Book Apothecary: The Travelling Museum of Artist's Books which explored traditional and digital books through touring exhibitions. We worked with 48 artists and more than 2000 readers bringing bookbinding, sculpture, printmaking and textile books to new audiences. This project was funded by The Cultural Olympiad, National Lottery, Arts Council England and local councils.

I look forward to welcoming you onto this workshop.

Please note that for all online workshops, tickets are non refundable.
