Travel Journal Tutorial

Welcome to this Recycled Travel Journal Tutorial, made up of recycled envelopes and maps, stitched together and cased into a hard cover journal with an elastic band to keep all your memories together.

What is a Travel Journal?

The focus on this tutorial is to create a sketchbook to use on your travels. I have used airmail envelopes to create 12 secret pockets where you can hold tickets, photographs or money. I’ve also used the maps of an atlas, which is great imagery for you to play with. You can use your own maps of a dream holiday to a location of your choosing and use the maps to chart or plan your journey. Draw, dream, sketch and write as you go. The small size means it’s easy to carry with you wherever you go!

What will I Learn?

You will learn how to choose papers, fold signatures and stitch your book block made up of envelopes, maps and papers before learning the Coptic binding method of bookbinding.

You will also learn how to make your own headband and how to attach endpapers to your book block.

You will create a hard cover with a book cloth margin and I’ll show you how to attach elastic to the back so you can keep your book together.

Kits

Our kits include all the materials to make this project. I’ll include airmail envelopes and maps from my collection in the kit. Please bring extra papers you would like to use. The kit also includes greyboard, book cloth and elastic ribbon.

You will need bookbinding tools including a bonefolder, scalpel, awl and PVA glue.

Do you need a bookbinding tool kit? Don’t forget to add one if you need one.
